For Open Source, I think SDCC or Small Device C Compiler is an open source compiler for Z80 and Z180 which uses Linux Operating System.

Using ZDS version 4.11.0 with the ZNEO works fine running it under WINE in Linux. Version 4.11.1 displays some incorrect character colors. Of course you need to use the network interface, I never got the serial one to work.

Zilog,

You should look at a minimum of having compatability with WINE under LINUX.

ZDS II 5.0 and Linux and WINE seem to work perfectly, ignoring any bugs ZDS II 5.0 may have related to itself. As I type, I have the Internet via Wireless LAN (WLAN) and a ZDS II 5.0 session on my wired eth0 interface. I set up a DHCP server (on same notebook) with my Zilog interface assigned fixed IP address based on its MAC address (192.168.5.x), WLAN on 192.168.1.x; all traffic except 192.168.5.x routed through WLAN.

Besides my history with Zilog processors (TRS80 Model 1, first assembler), I find the ZDS IDE works under Linux whereas I never got Microchip's IDE working well. And even though all my systems shipped with Windows, first thing I do is shrink its partition down and install Linux.

Zilog, as I stated earlier; try to maintain your IDE working under WINE. Version 4.11.0 was fine, later 4.11.x seem problematic on character color coding. 5.0 seems to be fine also - keep up the good work, even if its just luck.

I tried ZDSII 5.0 running under WINE on an Ubuntu 8.04 system. The software part works (compiling and debugging on the simulator) but some of the pop-up windows, such as Project/ Settings do not refresh properly. On the hardware side, I cannot get it to connect to the serial smart cable.

I have edited the win.ini file in the .wine/drive_c/windows directory to contain:

[serialports]
com1=/dev/ttyS0
com2=/dev/ttyS1

I have added myself to the dialout user group which is linked to the serial ports and have put in symbolic links to map com1/2 to the ttys0/1 ports:

$ ln -s /dev/ttyS0 com1

I still am unable to connect ZDSII to the target. The Initialising communication window gets to 37% and then I and get the following error:

[ERROR] Connection Failed. Check power and communication connections.
[ERROR] Target read/write error. (ERR_DTLI_SERIAL_ERROR)
[ERROR] Unable to connect to the target.

I know the development board is good because it continues to run the "ledblink.asm" test software loaded via a Windows machine earlier.

I will try the USB Smartcable on another free evening and see what happens.
