SCSI Controller: Z53C80 1 Year ago Karma: 0
Hello,

I was wondering if someone here has a firsthand experience dealing with SCSI, SCSI Implementations, and the SCSI Controller Z53C80, in particular!

Regards,

Mario

I used a Z0538010PSC, the same part I think. it was many years ago, but i designed the circuit and wrote the drivers for it. thousands of the end product were sold. what did you need to know? the CPU running it was an Z80180.

I looked up the Z53C80, it's very close but not exact to the Z0538010PSC

I couldn't find a datasheet for the one you mentioned, (Z0538010PSC). Which one is the older?

What I needed to know is the best route for a SCSI to CF card bridge and whether this SCSI controller device is a good choice for this type of application?

THanks,

Mario

Hi Mario,

I think the 53C80 might be the newer part. My design was done in 1991, I think I interchangeably used a national part and the zilog part. I never used the 53C80, because it's pined out differently, but the registers and programming all look the be the same. The device can be operated in both initiator and target mode so it seems usable for your application. I assume you are wanting to replace old SCSI hard drives with this device and use compact flash as the storage device? if so, have you considered using SD flash rather than CF? I have used a lot of CF on products that had a Z80380 CPU, and they proved to be a bit problematic.

Here is a link to the national/TI flavor of the Z0538010PSC
www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/dp5380.pdf

I could probably dig up the source code for the drivers I did for this part if you think they might help you, but they are in 80180 (Z80ish) assembler and 20 years old.

If you're referring to the datasheet for Z53C80, its at the documentation page.. take a look on this link

www.zilog.com/docs/serial/ps0108.pdf

and i think this SCSI controller runs at 3Mbps too.
